
Marni Shoemaker
Assistant Professor
Biography
Dr. Shoemaker is an assistant professor in the School of Health and Human Sciences and a registered dietitian. Her research focuses on how nutrition and exercise impact skeletal muscle health across the lifespan to improve health and performance, with a particular focus on healthier aging and sarcopenia. She has performed sports nutrition-based research looking at nutrition and performance in youth and collegiate athletes to better inform monitoring and evaluating athletes. Additionally, she has examined the integration of nutritional deficiencies, cardiometabolic health, and body composition with aging adults to better understand the role nutrition and exercise play with health and performance to promote healthspan over lifespan. Overall, her research aims on improving skeletal muscle health as a whole throughout different populations to best promote productivity, longevity and quality of life. She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in nutrition and sports nutrition. She is also a certified strength and conditioning specialist and certified as a USA-weightlifting coach, aiming to bring both nutritional and exercise instruction together in both research and applied settings.
